Sneakers bring people together.  They give countless people a healthy way to bond and form connections.  Certain pairs of shoes tell stories that voices and words alone are not able to convey. Posts will include sneaker reviews, store reviews, opinions, interviews, favorite sneakers lists, upcoming releases, on feet reviews, and basically anything sneaker related.

Shoes often go beyond the materialistic realm.  Enthusiasts and collectors appreciate the intangible aspects of sneakers just as much as the physical features.  Certain collaborations and limited releases have a deeper meaning attached to them.  They are usually not just a regular pair of shoes.  The brands, back stories, collaborative efforts, and creativity tend to draw in a particular crowd that appreciates immaterial aspects of both sought after and general releases.

Jordan Talk: Best of Reimagined

Jordan Brand releases timeless and classic models and colorways every year. A rather recent phenomenon is people purposely dyeing their sneakers to look “aged” has made its way to the largest scale possible. Air Jordans look amazing new but something about a perfectly aged pair hits different. Natural yellowing through oxidization is inevitable on countless pairs. Jordan Brand has capitalized on the aged look with their “reimagined” collection.

A few Reimagined Air Jordans stand out more than others because of the near perfect execution by Jordan Brand.

Air Jordan 1 Chicago Reimagined Lost and Found

The Air Jordan 1 Chicago is one of the most timeless and sought after Jordans of all time. You can even argue that the original Chicagos are one of the most coveted sneakers known to man. Especially since this Jordan only re-released twice (1994 and 2015) since its inception in 1985, the Lost and Founds were already a hit before they hit the market.

Air Jordan 1 Chicago Reimagined Lost and Found

Although the Air Jordan 1 Chicago Reimagined Lost and Found isn’t labeled as a retro release of the original Chicagos, they are still a unique pair that combines specs from the 1985 and 1994 pairs. Cracked leather and slightly aged midsoles paired with the timeless black and red combo makes for a special release of the Chicago 1s.

Air Jordan 4 Bred Reimagined

The “Bred” colorway is one of the most iconic color blockings in Jordan history. Any time the black and red color blocking hits a timeless model, sneakerheads everywhere will rush to get their hands on a pair.

Some sneaker enthusiasts prefer specs as close as possible to original modifications. Others appreciate any version of timeless silhouettes.

Air Jordan 4 Bred Reimagined

Before the Air Jordan 4 Bred Reimagined officially released, many people had split opinions on the updated design. Many weren’t feeling the leather instead of the traditional nubuck on this pair. However, countless opinions changed once pairs hit hands earlier this month. A timeless look with a new twist makes for a unique version of the Bred 4s.

Air Jordan 3 Black Cement Reimagined

One of the best sneakers of all time and one of the best Jordans ever made. This classic will never go out of style. The Air Jordan 3 Black Cement is a timeless and recognizable pair of sneakers that will always be highly respected.

Rumored to release towards the end of the year, this pair will be highly sought after for sneakerheads all over. As long as the upper material doesn’t get changed from the classic leather, this release will be eyed by many. The reimagined release of the Black Cement 3s should be even more sought after than the similar rendition of the White Cement Jordan 3s.

Air Jordan 3 Black Cement Reimagined

I still have my 2018 pair and they are COOKED. I’ll be waiting patiently for this reimagined version of the Black Cement 3s.

How To Collect Sneakers: A Simple Guide to Creating a Collection You Love

When someone says they collect something, you can tell how passionate they are about their collection. An enthusiast who says they collect sneakers might not have the largest or most expensive collection, but all that matters is that it’s their collection. Nobody can take that away.

Some mistake accumulating for collecting. However, a massive collection isn’t always meaningful. How many pairs of sneakers hold personal significance within the collector?

Collecting sneakers isn’t about buying, selling, and trading shoes. Sneaker enthusiasts all around the world love their collections because they are personal and hold more significance beyond materialistic values.

Building a Sneaker Collection From Nothing

If I was staring my sneaker collection from scratch, I would do things a little differently than I did when I started to seriously invest in a collection and collect sneakers.

First, I would start off by doing research about different types of sneakers. Many people fall in line with the masses and buy what’s hot when first starting out a sneaker collection. Anyone can collect sneakers, but few create a solid collection with personal and meaningful sneakers.

Collect sneakers

An important step to building any sneaker collection is doing your due diligence and researching sneakers and potential places to purchase from. Anyone who first starts off a collection will inevitably overspend and ultimately learn from their mistakes. Personally, I took a big L when I bought a pair of Jordan 3 Crimsons from Flight Club (one of the most overpriced sneaker stores in the world). However, I learned to pretty much never buy sneakers from places like these and have saved myself countless times since I started collecting sneakers seriously.

Lastly, a collection needs time and room to adapt, evolve, and grow. Sneaker taste changes over time for various reasons. The same goes for sneaker collections as a whole. You can’t expect the same sneakers to make up a collection forever. Style and personal preferences change over time. Give that collection life by switching things up and embracing change.

Maintaining A Personalized Collection

The key to maintaining any collection requires conscious awareness. Being aware that a collection can change and evolve over time allows collectors to have a maintain a unique and personalized collection.

Anyone who wants to collect sneakers must consider the time, effort, and money required to maintain the collection. Simply buying sneakers and amassing sneakers doesn’t lead to a personalized collection. The upkeep of a sneaker collection requires constant attention and resources.

There are too many horror stories of collectors pulling out stockpiled sneakers only to find them crumbling and literally falling apart.

Collect sneakers

Proper care and routine upkeep are essential to maintaining a sneaker collection. Sneakers must be kept right around room temperature while avoiding direct sunlight. High humidity often kills the lifespan of sneakers. General wear is suggested by countless enthusiasts to avoid crumbling midsoles. Even a few wears per year can extend the lifespan of a sneaker by a few years.

So You Want to Collect Sneakers

Nobody can or should start a collection for you. Collections are only unique because they are personalized and don’t try to imitate other collections.

Collecting sneakers isn’t a joke. It requires countless hours of researching and buying/selling trading, as well as high costs for sneakers as well as accessories (storage, cleaning supplies, etc.).

Starting a sneaker collection is far from cheap. Anyone interested in sneakers knows how time consuming and expensive the art of sneaker collecting has become.

Sneakers come in all different colors, shapes, and sizes. A diverse collection needs unique sneakers to keep the collecting exciting and fresh. Sneaker collecting isn’t a joke. Simply buying new sneakers isn’t collecting.

The act of consciously buying sneakers and maintaining their appearance while appreciating sneaker history leads to a solid sneaker collection.

Finding Your Niche in Sneakers

It’s easier than ever to find your niche in sneakers because of how widespread the sneaker world has become. Sneakers have gone noticeably mainstream over the past few years. It’s inevitable to see someone wearing Jordan 1s or Yeezys on the street but they aren’t really “sneakerheads.”

Niches are evident in every fashion subculture. Sneakers have literally something for everyone; anyone can find a sneaker that suits their style and personal appearance. From “dad” shoes to timeless Air Jordans to new silhouettes and models, there is an abundance of variety in the world of sneakers.

Niche In Sneakers: Something for Everyone

Sneakers have evolved since they were first introduced in the fashion world and will continue to evolve for the foreseeable future. Shoes have been around forever. However, sneakers are a rather recent phenomenon in the vast history of footwear.

Most sneakers used to be considered basketball, running or even “tennis shoes.” Now, sneakers aren’t limited to sport or athletic wear. Finding a particular niche in sneakers is easier than ever because of the variety in the sneaker realm.

Sneakers have expended into niches in fashion that haven’t been touched before. Companies like Gucci, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen appeal to high-end and luxury consumers with sneakers that look and feel “elevated.” These luxury fashion houses have gone deeper in their bags to include sneakers in their footwear lines to reach niche audiences and bring in more customers who wouldn’t have been reachable otherwise.

Of course, footwear giants like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, and even Puma produce a vast array of sneakers which gives almost everyone something to fit into their wardrobe. Some sneakers are better paired with athletic wear while some can be “dressed up” and others are meant for practical purposes like playing a sport or engaging in intense exercise.

One Size Fits Most

Sneakers are an incredibly general type of footwear. They can be used for a few purposes or many, depending on the type of sneaker. One sneaker will not serve every purpose possible, but they will often be versatile and compatible for a variety of occasions.

For example, a pair of Jordans can be worn to play basketball, going shopping, and even going on a date. However, all sneakers aren’t like this. Sneakers built for running are more limited in their capability. They aren’t practical for much besides its intended use.

Although sneakers cover a broad range of footwear, some are better for certain purposes than others. A niche in sneakers doesn’t necessary limit the shoes. Sometimes they are multi-functional. Other times they are more focused towards a particular specialty.

Finding A Unique Niche in Sneakers

Someone new to the sneaker world may be overwhelmed by the plethora of choices. Once a niche is carefully picked, buying sneakers becomes ten times easier and simpler.

Someone who wants a pair of comfortable New Balances will often have a certain price point in mind. Also, they have a better idea of where to look and where to stay away from. A basketball-focused site won’t be ideal to find a pair of 990s. Once a niche is selected, sneaker buying becomes much more enjoyable.

Niche in sneakers

Most sneaker enthusiasts target a particular type of sneaker. Some may prefer timeless silhouettes like Air Jordan 1s or 3s, while others are more interested in new models and colorways from Nike or New Balance. As people get older, they get a better idea of what type of sneaker suits their style and which ones don’t. Sneaker buying becomes more enjoyable because options become more limited and focused on fitting into a particular unique style.

Five Thrilling Air Jordans to Look Forward to in 2024

Every year brings new Air Jordan releases along. Some are instant hits, while others are duds, and a few take time to be fully appreciated. At the end of each year, top ten lists are often made. However, there isn’t as much attention regarding the most anticipated Air Jordans to be released throughout the year.

Most of the highly anticipated sneaker releases are collabs. First, collaborations often provide a breath of fresh air. Outside influence can be beneficial when sneaker brands work cohesively with designers and creatives. Also, collab releases tend to be more hyped because of the demand. More people look forward to sneaker collabs compared to general releases. However, some of the best Jordans may be limited releases without an outside designer attached to the release.

Air Jordan 1 Low Year of the Dragon

2024 is the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. This particular pair releases as a celebration of the Chinese New Year. Jordan Brand has been known to include many cultures besides American culture in their footwear and apparel.

New and refreshing concepts like the Year of the Dragon colorway keeps sneakerheads on their toes. Jordan Brand will always heavily rely on originals, but new colorways and concepts keep things interesting and push the brand to step outside of the signature Jumpman looks.

Trophy Room x Air Jordan 1 Low

Everyone interested in sneakers knows all about the controversy surrounding the release of the Trophy Room Air Jordan 1 High. Marcus Jordan used his connections and status to his advantage and to the disadvantage of countless sneaker enthusiasts everywhere.

Although Marcus Jordan will never be one of the most liked figures in the sneaker world, Trophy Room releases will always draw attention and create immense demand. Hopefully the Trophy Room Air Jordan 1 Low release goes smoother than the previous releases. Even if Marcus Jordan is still on his typical bullshit, this Jordan collab will nonetheless be a top hit for 2024.

Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low Black/Olive

Anything with Travis Scott’s name is sure to have some hype tied to it. Jordan Brand and Cactus Jack have been on a roll since the partnership started in 2017. The olive Travis Scott Jordans that released last year was an instant success. This year’s rendition of the olive Travis Scott Jordan will be sure to have tons of hype and demand around the pair. As long as the partnership between Nike and Travis Scott remains thriving and healthy, the duo will continue to produce hits year in and year out.

Holiday release Jordan 11s haven’t been hitting the same over the last few years. However, the Columbias will bring the Jordan hype back to the holiday season. A long awaited release will bring some needed hype back to Jordan 11s.

The Columbia 11s haven’t been released since 2014. Ten years is a long time in the sneaker world; many sneakerheads and Jordan enthusiasts will be anticipating this long overdue release. Air Jordan 11s will always be a timeless silhouette, although some colorways don’t do the model justice. However, there is no question that the Columbia colorway will be sure to bring some hype and needed attention around Jordan 11 holiday releases.

Air Jordan Bred 4 Reimagined

Jordan Brand has taken the reimagined idea and ran with it like Usain Bolt in the Olympics. We won’t be seeing the last “reimagined” Air Jordan anytime soon. Why fix something if it’s not broken?

The Air Jordan 3 White Cement Reimagined was an instant hit last year. Although this version of the Bred 4s utilizes black leather rather than the typical suede, the pair will still be popular amongst countless Air Jordan and sneaker enthusiasts. Every year will hold some exciting sneakers to look forward to. Many of these kicks are none other than Air Jordans. Young and old alike both flock to these iconic sneakers for countless reasons.

Jordans go beyond the court; they have transcended into streetwear, leisurewear, and even high-end fashion. Due to their versatility, there is literally a colorway or two that every sneaker enthusiast would like even if they aren’t crazy for Air Jordans.

Nike and Jordan Brand will continue to push boundaries while maintaining a rich history. This year and many years to come will reveal many thrilling Jordan releases.

Top 10 Sneakers of 2023

Every year must wrap up with a personal list of the best sneakers. Each list is entirely subjective. Some overlap may be expected. However, everyone’s unique sneaker taste makes collecting sneakers fresh, interesting and conversational.

Enjoy and leave a comment of your personal top 10 sneakers of the year!

10. A Ma Maniere Air Jordan 12 White

Another women’s release in extended sizing by A Ma Maniere and Jordan Brand. The duo has been on a hot streak over the past few years.

A minimal aesthetic is kept on point as with previous AMM x JB releases. Burgundy suede on the lower panel and a white leather upper complete the luxurious look.

This release is one of my personal favorites of the year. They aren’t considered a top ten sneaker by many, but they make my list because the Jordan 12 is one of my favorite Jordan models of all time. The French Blue 12s are one of the favorite cops when I first started to get more invested in sneakers.

Although many people aren’t as high on 12s as other models like 1s, 3,s and 4s, they are still a clean looking silhouette. Paired with premium luxe materials, a satin sock-liner, and suede hints, the A Ma Maniere Jordan 12 displays signs of quality craftsmanship.

9. New Balance 990v6 Made in USA Action Bronson Baklava

Anyone that knows of Action Bronson knows how unique and outgoing the man is. The sneakers fit his style and personality damn near perfectly.

Bronson has made it publicly known that he’s a major supporter of New Balance even before the brand’s massive popularity increase over the last few years. The unique colorway stands out just like the Queens native. Although another pair comes in shades of blue, the Baklava pair stands out and represents Bronson’s uniqueness well.

Although these sneakers aren’t for everyone, they are without a doubt original and exciting. If someone is walking down a busy street wearing the Baklavas, they will be sure to get heads turning. The loud sneakers are a refreshing look on a timeless silhouette. Bronson described the sneakers as a painting- something meant to evoke emotion.

8. Nike Kobe 6 Protro Reverse Grinch

The Kobe 6 Grinch is one of the best Nike basketball shoes of the modern era. A red “reverse” pair surfaced earlier this year and shock dropped before officially releasing on December 15th.

Nike Kobe 6s are one of the most recognized Kobe models. The original Kobe 6 Grinch released Christmas Day 2010. A release hit the market for Christmas 2020. Arguably the best colorway in the Kobe sneaker line, the Christmas-inspired basketball sneakers are highly respected and appreciated all over the world.

Nike knew they wouldn’t be able to top the OG Grinches but still had plans for a successful sequel pair. The Reverse Grinches are a unique nod to the originals. Both are almost instantly recognizable. The Nike Kobe 6s are popular amongst many NBA players; the Reverse Grinch 6s will be sure to be a hit in the league just like their predecessors.

7. Nike SB Dunk Low Jarritos

Another year with tons of Dunks. However, some stand out more than others for obvious reasons. The collaboration between Nike SB and the Mexican soft drink brand Jarritos captures history and heritage in a clean pair of summer sneakers.

The tearaway hemp canvas overlay adds a unique touch to the pair as hints of orange are shown in high abrasion areas after considerable use. The canvas is inspired by original canvas bags used to harvest vibrant fruits central to the iconic Jarritos flavors. Green and orange hues are highlighted throughout the sneakers as homage to the brand’s iconic colors.

This collab proved to be one of the better Nike SB Dunk Low releases and best Dunks of the year period. The special edition pair comes with a separate box stacked with four Jarritos classic drinks. Mandarin, lime, pineapple, and fruit punch all make the cut. The classic bottles are specially branded with Nike’s check logo.

6. Travis Scott Air Jordan 1 Low Olive

Another year, another Travis Scott collab making a top ten end of year list. Bangers will continue to be produced as long as Jordan Brand and Scott continue their working relationship.

Continuing with neutral colors, the olive swoosh adds a nice touch to complement the cream midsole. Black suede and white leather complete the Jordan 1 low with a fresh look.

Although not as hyped as other Travis Scott Jordan 1 Lows, the olive pair is nonetheless an instant sell out. The demand will be prevalent for any well designed Jordan x Travis Scott collab.

The backwards swoosh will always draw attention. Although the Travis Scott collab hype isn’t at its peak, the duo between the Houston rapper and Nike still make countless end of year lists.

5. J Balvin Air Jordan 3 Medellin Sunset

The first few collaborations between Colombian global star J Balvin and Jordan Brand have been extremely underwhelming. The Jordan 3 gave Balvin a fresh approach to work on something simple yet unique.

A gradient midsole represents the Medellin sunset going from a deep purple to a vibrant yellow. Balvin’s iconic smiley face is seen on the heel tab opposite of the Nike Air branding.

A clean and simple look makes this sneaker’s midsole pop even more. Some of J Balvin’s previous Jordan collabs have been loud or even all over the place. His work on the Jordan 3s proved to be one of his best works with Air Jordan yet. Balvin has publicly said he wants to work his way through even more Jordan models. A Jordan 4 or 5 might be on the horizon soon between the duo.

4. A Ma Maniere x Nike Air Ship

The sneaker that created the Air Jordan 1. Keeping up with the “reimagined” trend over the past few years, AMM and Jordan Brand didn’t disappoint on this often overlooked silhouette.

This collab saw many people draw toward the classic silhouette. A Ma Maniere knows how to add unique touches without implementing unnecessary changes or modifications.

The A Ma Maniere Nike Air Ship showcases the model how it should be. Vintage black, white and cream soles mesh perfectly. Signature AMM logos are seen throughout the pair recognizing a major part of Air Jordan and sneaker history.

3. Air Jordan 3 White Cement Reimagined

A classic colorway reimagined. Plain and simple. Timeless and exquisite.

One of the best Jordan 3 colorways and arguably one of the best Jordan colorways of all time make a return with a unique twist. The Nike Air on the heel tab is always more appreciated than the Jumpan logo.

Although quality control on the elephant print wasn’t up to most’s liking, the pair still remains a top contender for some of the best sneakers of the year. Minor infractions didn’t take away the magnitude and importance of the White Cement Reimagined 3s in 2023.

2. Nike SB Air Jordan 4 Pine Green

The Jordan 4 craze has still been relevant in 2023. This pair will make countless lists and will often be a top three pick.

White and green don’t make it onto many Jordans for many reasons. However, the work between the design teams at Jordan Brand and Nike SB exceeded expectations. This pair of sneakers was executed flawlessly. The only people hating on this pair are those who don’t like Nike and/or Jordan to begin with.

Appreciate a classic when it’s right in front of you. The years from now, the Nike SB Air Jordan 4 Pine Green will be considered one of the best Jordan releases of the decade.

1. Joe Freshgoods New Balance 990v4 Keisha Blue

A Chicago exclusive. All blue on a timeless model. Glow in the dark laces. Premium touch and feel.

This pair made it just in time to claim the top spot. Those who say it came out too late are placing unnecessary requirements and criteria for being one of the best sneakers of the year. Joe Freshgoods coming out of Chi-town has killed it year in and year out.

The Freshgoods 990v4 pack has been nothing short of amazing. Premium materials paired with timeless silhouettes make for a highly anticipated collaboration. New Balance has been consistently teaming up with hot designers like Joe Freshgoods; the Boston-based brand has shown their willingness to step out of the box and give creative control to respected artists and designers. Joe Freshgoods has been on a run and will continue producing quality work in 2024 and beyond.

Sneakers and Basketball: A Perfect Match

Sneakers and basketball go together perfectly like ganja and cold water. The duo complements each other almost perfectly. Most people think of something related with basketball when talking about sneakers and vice versa.

The evolution of sneakers and basketball go hand in hand. As times goes on, the connection between the two will only run deeper.

Basketball Sneakers: An Extraordinary Evolution

Sneakers and basketball started with humble beginnings. Players back in the day used to wear Converse high tops which provided virtually no ankle support. Now, basketball players are seen wearing low-top sneakers on court more than ever. It’s not even a debate that low cut basketball sneakers today are far more supportive and cushioning than even the highest of high-tops back when the NBA started to become mainstream.

Technology in performance sneakers has vastly improved over the past few decades which has proved to be immensely valuable for fans, players, teams, owners, coaches, and leagues all over the world. Now, a rolled or sprained ankle will not sideline a player for nowhere nearly as long as it used to. Anyone who has grown up watching basketball has witnessed a noticeable change in the technology built into performance basketball shoes. Even a decade ago, players would be hesitant to wear mid and low cut sneakers. Now, it’s the norm for the most active players on the hardwood to go for lows without worrying about their ankles all game.

Converse Chuck Taylors crawled so Jordans could walk. Even though Air Jordans weren’t the best on-court sneakers, they introduced a new level of cushioning- Nike Air. Now, LeBrons, KDs, Kobes, and countless other Nikes are fitted with top of the line technology crafted through countless years of trial and error before hitting the market. Basketball sneakers from other brands have also increased their technology exponentially. Adidas, Under Armour, and Puma basketball lines have gained massive respect over the last decade.

The evolution between sneakers and basketball has highlighted in footwear technology. Massive brands like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, and Puma will continue to come out with innovative performance sneakers for years to come with no signs of slowing down or stopping anytime soon.

Basketball and Sneakers: Styling Off the Court

Basketball and sneakers run deep together. Obviously the duo teams up constantly on the court whether its on the hardwood or concrete. Over the last couple decades, basketball’s style has expanded visibly off the court. Influential figures like Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, even Dennis Rodman, and today’s fashion experts such as Russell Westbrook have all contributed to the overall impact of basketball and sneakers.

Sneakers were once strictly for practice and games. With the introduction of Air Jordans, there was a noticeable shift in fashion and streetwear. As the 80s ended and the 90s began, it became more acceptable and rather fashionable to rock basketball sneakers to grocery stores, the movies, or even on hot dates. Jordans helped pave the way for countless other sneakers off the court.

Certain players have influenced fashion around basketball more than others. Some have different reasons or motives, but all influential figures must be acknowledged to remember how far basketball and fashion have come together.

Allen Iverson was not only one of the best players in the game in the early 2000s, but also one of the most influential outside of the arena. His sense of style pushed boundaries and broke barriers. Simple clothes were the norm at the time; Iverson donned chains, cornrows, baggy clothes, headbands, and visible tattoos. The NBA came back with an answer (no pun intended) and implemented a strict dress code.

Iverson’s individuality paved the way for NBA players and athletes across all sports. Now, players are encouraged to wear what they like and don’t have to be confined to dress codes.

Another influential figure that has impacted fashion in the basketball world is Russell Westbrook. He has always looked to step out of the box when it comes to fashion; he has shown how sneakers can be dressed up or down through his unique style choices. Westbrook’s brand Honor the Gift has been heavily influential in not only the basketball world but also the streetwear community as well. He has shown how sneakers and basketball tie into fashion and boundaries are meant to be pushed to and past their limits.

The Future of Sneakers and Basketball

Basketball and sneakers have a long history together. As technology advances in both worlds, the connection between the two will grow even stronger.

Basketball players will continue to wear the best of the best. Sneaker enthusiasts will continue to listen to stories related to or directly involving basketball.

Together, sneakers and basketball have a bright future. There is no denying the impact both have had on fashion, sports, and millions of people around the world. Sneakers and basketball are universally loved no matter the country, time, or language.

The Unfortunate Dark Side of Sneakers

Back dooring is nothing new in the world of sneakers. Ever since limited/hype releases have been a thing, people have found ways to make as much profit as possible. Anyone who has been around sneakers for a year or longer knows about the dark side of sneakers and how much shady business goes on.

Major corporations and small businesses alike often don’t have the consumer’s best interest at hand. While more goes on than most people know, the first step to combating shady business is to first acknowledge that something unethical is going on.

Back Dooring and Shady Business Practices

Anyone who knows how sneaker shops work know that back dooring is nothing new. Sneakers are often sold to third parties or even other retailers before official release dates. Some stores back door to their own employees while others look to maximize profits. At the end of the day, sneaker stores will continue to back door sneakers or even apparel until they get caught. Sneaker culture gives certain stores a pass while holding other brands more accountable for the shady business practices.

Shady business practices are prevalent at a well-known sneaker and apparel store. When waiting out in line in previous experiences, certain employees would often let potential customers know they have one guess for a particular sneaker size. If that size was out of stock, the potential buyer had to go back in line to attempt to guess correctly. What retail stores make people play a guessing game? How does that encourage trust and loyalty between customers and retailers?

Hyped and exclusive sneakers are often glorified and put on a pedestal. This often leads to employees partaking in shady business practices. Some workers are pressured into back dooring for certain buyers while others do it without a blink of an eye or second thought.

The Dark Side of Reselling

Reselling has been around since commerce has been a thing in the world. Buy low, sell high. You can’t get much simpler than that. However, sneaker reselling often gets a bad reputation for various reasons.

First, sneaker resellers typically portray an image as greedy and power-hungry individuals. After countless hyped releases, people are seen with rooms full of sneakers strictly for selling; many sneaker enthusiasts miss out on exclusive releases and are left empty-handed.

Anyone can attempt to purchase exclusive sneakers, but few are usually successful. When the masses can’t even get a fair chance at buying new kicks, they will start to question the ethics of resellers first and sneaker brands second.

Also, the fact that big-time resellers often work directly with sneaker retailers adds to the mistrust between countless customers and major corporations. Some stores work with resellers who are willing to pay top dollar for early pairs and/or bulk pairs. These same stores portray false images to potential customers who are trying to do things the right way.

Major resellers get a bad rep for valid reasons. It frustrates countless sneaker enthusiasts who want sneakers for personal wear when they don’t feel they have a fair chance at purchasing particular pairs.

Resell culture will always be a thing, but a shift in sneakers provides more hope as of recently. Now, the average resale price of a hyped sneaker is typically not nearly as high as it would have been only a few years ago. Hopefully the tide can continue to sway in favor of enthusiasts who appreciate sneakers for years to come.

Dark Side Crashing Down

The dark side of sneakers will always be prevalent. The first step to addressing a problem is to first acknowledge the issue. Countless sneakerheads are aware of the dark side of sneakers. Now it is up to those who have a platform to use their voices in a productive way to raise awareness of the pressing issues in the sneaker community.

Anyone can call out the bad apples, but it takes many to address and bring down the top dogs. The sneaker community is generally supportive and welcoming; with enough will power and determination, the community can improve to be even more open and accepting of different styles, viewpoints, and perspectives.

Dark sides will always be around in virtually every industry, community, or group of individuals. Regarding sneakers, the dark side seems to be on the decline. The advantage is in the buyers’ hands at least for now; the sneaker market is clearly in favor of buyers. Resell prices are down and sneakers are more readily available than ever. There is a reason to be optimistic in regards to the sneaker world as a whole.

Top Sneaker Pickups of the Year

Every year holds new personal favorite sneaker pickups. Every favorite list is entirely subjective and represents an individual’s style and personal taste in sneakers.

2023 has been personally slow for pickups for multiple reasons. However, a list is still doable and justified every year.

Nike Air Force One West Indies Anniversary Edition

The original AF1 West Indies that dropped over twenty years ago is a major grail. The craze behind them was unmatched at the time. Although the OG pair would be nice to have, I have no complaints about the anniversary pair.

I surprised myself this year and bought my first every pair of Air Forces. When I saw this particular pair on sale on Nike, I knew I had to grab them. Most sneaker pickups for $60 are a great deal, but a brand new pair is rarely heard of at such a price point in 2023. “West Indies: Anniversary Edition” completes the iconic look on the tongue tag.

New Balance 574 x Joe Freshgoods

Although this pair is slept on, I knew I had to add them to my collection. A neutral pair of sneakers for a reasonable price is rarely passed on. This pair is extremely versatile and gets a lot of use because of how easy they are to wear. The materials are also constructed well together.

The 574 remains one of New Balance’s classic models. Joe Freshgoods has been killing his collabs with NB and shows no signs of slowing down. Expect more solid work between the Chicago native and the Boston-based sneaker label.

The partnership between Joe Freshgoods and New Balance has just scratched the surface of the full potential for both parties. Anyone who keeps up with sneakers has seen the power of a collaboration. New Balance prides itself on working with creatives who appreciate history while looking to break boundaries as well.

New Balance 550 x Aimé Leon Dore White

After twenty plus years of not buying New Balance, I bought several pairs this year. The brand has another supporter as they continuously produce amazing collabs and take pride in their craftsmanship.

Sneaker pickups- NB ALD 550

This particular pair is versatile as well and has been one of my most worn sneakers this year. They go with just about everything and don’t look bad after getting beat up.

Teddy Santis and his label Aimé Leon Dore have been making serious noise in the sneaker community. His collabs with New Balance have been causing sneaker enthusiasts to flock to the highly popular 550 model.

Without any surprise, another New Balance makes my list of favorite sneaker pickups for 2023.

A Ma Maniere x Nike Air Ship Black/White

Nike dominates my top sneaker pickups yet again. The Nike Air Ship is typically a silhouette that doesn’t get much attention, but A Ma Maniere (AMM) changed the story this year. Through their impeccable collabs with Nike, AMM prides itself on quality and craftsmanship. Signature details such as an inner tongue label and premium sock lining highlight this special Air Ship.

Sneaker pickups- AMM Air Ship

The AMM Nike Air Ship revived some attention and appreciation for the sneaker. A luxurious feel for only $140 retail is damn near unbeatable in today’s sneaker market. The cream/”aged” midsole competes this pair to emulate the original Nike Air Ships. The pair that came before the iconic Air Jordan 1 doesn’t get as much love, but A Ma Maniere allowed sneaker enthusiasts to appreciate history more with this collab.

Nike Dunk Low Red Panda

The Nike Dunk Low has been over-saturated and run into the ground. However, an appealing collab or new colorway might come out every now and then. The Red Pandas immediately caught my eye when I first saw them online. The neutral/fall colors pairs well with my closet so this pickup was a no-brainer.

Perfect for the fall. A new colorway brings a refreshing look to the well-known Dunks.

Nike will continue to produce countless pairs of general release Dunks. Hopefully, the Oregon-bases giant will use collabs to encourage artists and creatives to give the model inspiring looks and stories to tell.

Sneaker Pickups: Looking Forward

Moving forward, I plan to be even more intentional with my sneaker pickups. New sneakers are being released everyday, so missing out on certain pairs shouldn’t lead to irrational decisions. Wearability and versatility are two major components that I look for in new sneakers. Loud and colorful sneakers may be cool to wear sometimes, but colors that pair well with numerous clothes typically get more wear and overall use.

Sneaker pickups are exciting year and year out. Personal style changes as will new sneaker pickups and the type of sneakers being collected.

Air Jordan 1 Royal 2017 vs. Air Jordan 1 Royal Reimagined

Classic color blocking never goes out of style. The Air Jordan 1 Royal is one of the most well-known and sought after Jordan colorways of all time. New styles come out every year, but nothing can compare to the classics.

Jordan Brand has been pushing out “reimagined” pairs recently. The concept gives classic colors a breath of fresh air. However, the new sneakers aren’t hitting the same for everyone. They require a certain level of appreciation; otherwise they are just another concept that can be easily under-appreciated and undervalued.

Royal History

It’s no secret that the Air Jordan 1 came out in 1985. However, it is not as well-known that Michael Jordan actually never wore the Royal 1s on an NBA court. Having spent most of his career in Chicago, MJ typically wore Bulls’ colors (red, white, and black). So how did the Air Jordan 1 Royal become so iconic and one of Jordan’s favorite color combinations?

The Royal 1s were actually one of the first pair of Jordans the public saw MJ wear. One of the first Air Jordan posters shows Michael Jordan wearing the Royal 1s with a matching royal and black sleeveless Flight suit on a runway. The iconic photo taken by Chuck Kuhn sparked the sensation surrounding one of the three original Air Jordan 1 colorways (the other two- Chicago and Banned).

The only picture of Jordan wearing the Royal AJ1s on court was when he was playing a pickup game on a cruise ship. The iconic photo shows MJ wearing the sleek Flight suit made famous in the original poster along with the original Air Jordan 1 Royals.

Although Jordan never wore the royal and black classic in an NBA game, the sneakers still became an instant classic. Since 1985, the Royal AJ1s have been re-released multiple times. Sneaker enthusiasts everywhere appreciate the original Jordan 1 colorways; if they didn’t exist, there wouldn’t be all these new collabs and color combos coming out every year.

Air Jordan 1 Royal 2017

Every so often Jordan Brand re-releases classic colorways. Every time a new release comes out, people instantly compare the newest version to the previous and even several prior releases. While some re-releases are better than others, nothing can top the originals. The 1985 Royal 1s will always be superior to other versions just like the original Chicagos and Breds compared to their own re-releases.

Air Jordan 1 Royal 2017

Instead of solely comparing the 2017 pair to previous releases, the main focus will be on what makes this pair so special and unique. With a release date of April 1, 2017, the Royal 1s quickly became one of the hottest Jordan 1s to drop that year with a retail price of $160. Following the Bred 1s release in September 2016, the Royals were highly anticipated for obvious reasons.

Sneakers in 2017 weren’t nearly as mainstream as they are today. If the same Air Jordan 1 Royal released today, they wouldn’t be as appreciated for many reasons. First, many new “sneakerheads” in today’s age don’t nearly appreciate original colorways as collectors who have been around for numerous years. Also, the market is so saturated right now; releases come out virtually every day.

Many people won’t feel as bad about missing out on a pair in 2023 compared to 2016/2017. Now, a new release is right around the corner. The AJ1 Royals will always be a classic no matter what shape or form they come in.

Air Jordan 1 Royal Reimagined

Reimagined pairs have been a new commodity on the sneaker market. After the release of the Lost and Found Jordan 1s and the Air Jordan 3 White Cement Reimagined, Jordan Brand has quickly realized a way to capitalize off a trend. The Air Jordan 4 Bred Reimagined is expected to release early 2024 as well.

The AJ1 Royal Reimagined doesn’t have as much hype as other Jordan Reimagined pairs, but these sneakers are still a solid option for any royal fan. The materials are different from what is generally expected on an Air Jordan 1. With a full suede build instead of the tradition leather construction, things already take a different approach to the classic colorway.

Air Jordan 1 Royal Reimagined

Also, the Royal blue on this particular pair is much brighter and vibrant than the Royal blue on the 2017 AJ1. Sneaker enthusiasts sometimes get hung up on tweaks and modifications amongst releases like materials and colors. However, at the end of the day, every release isn’t supposed to be identical.

Air Jordan 1 Royal Reimagined

The Reimagined Royals aren’t meant to be a copy of the originals. They are reimagined for a reason.

The Air Jordan 1 Royal Reimagined takes a unique approach as the sneakers are a refreshing twist on a classic colorway. This pair definitely isn’t for everyone; however, they are extremely accessible and plenty of pairs were produced.

Coming in at a retail price of $180, the Air Jordan 1 Royal Reimagined officially release November 4, 2023. Early pairs from SNKRS Exclusive Access have already started to go out to customers.

Royal Rumble

The ‘Royal’ color block is one of the most iconic colorways in the history of the Jordan Brand. Sneaker enthusiasts will continue to debate which re-releases are the closest to the originals. However, if people take the time to appreciate the history and multiple iterations of the Royal 1s, they will be able to fully understand the cultural significance of the three original Air Jordan 1s.

New colorways continue to come out every year. Countless colorways are influenced by the Chicagos, Breds, and Royals. Jordan Brand will always come out with releases that appeal to the masses. Every now and then, colorways come out that will break barriers and push boundaries. However, the OG colorways will never go out of style. Jordans wouldn’t be where they are today without the influential originals.
